The
BA of E held their Under 13 Junior Challenger Tournament on
Saturday the 24th January 2004. The tournament was hosted
by Northumberland County Badminton Association at the Gateshead
Leisure Centre.
As
usual, Yorkshire presented a healthy turnout comprising some 9
Girls and 17 boys at all grades.
Our
players had a successful tournament winning 8 gold, 5 silver and
5 bronze medals between them all. The
results are as follows:
Boys
In
the Grade 2 Singles, Paul Scott (Yorks) managed to win his box
securing a Bronze Medal, whilst Mark Middleton (Yorks) won the
Gold by beating Matthew Nottingham (Lincolnshire) in the
final.
In
the Main Doubles, Mark Middleton (Yorks) and Daniel Thompson
(Lincolnshire) won the box of 5 pairs to win the Gold.
In
the Grade 3 Singles, William Hall (Yorks) narrowly lost out to
Kabir Khan (Nottinghamshire) 21-19 in the final, thereby winning
the Silver Medal. In the Grade 4 Singles, James Scott
(Yorks) managed to win his box (on count-back) but lost out to
Michael Johnston (Lancashire) in the Quarter Final.
In
the Boys Alternate Doubles, Mark Harrison (Yorks) and Matthew
Stacey (Nottinghamshire) won their box to win a Bronze Medal
Girls
In
the Grade 2 Singles, Jessica Fletcher (Yorks) and Sarah Milne
(Yorks) both came through their boxes undefeated to meet in the
only Semi-final. Jessica beat Sarah to play Anna
Wilson (Lincolnshire) in the final, where Anna was too strong
for Jessica.
In
the Main Doubles, Sarah Milne and Jessica Fletcher won the only
group of 5 pairs, with Laura Mercer (Yorks) taking runner up
spot with her partner Lauren Smith of Cumbria.
In
the Grade 3 Singles, 5 of the 7 girls were from Yorkshire.
Harriet Shillitoe (Yorks) took the Gold, beating Eleanor Laws
(Northumberland) 21-8.
In
the Grade 4 Singles, Natalie Jones (Yorks) just lost out to
Emily Mumby (Lincolnshire) in the only semi-final, 14-17 after
setting, to take a bronze medal.
In
alternative doubles, Harriet Shillitoe and Jane Colley (both
Yorks) won the Gold by beating the winners of the other box, Stephanie Bridge
(Nottinghamshire) & Elizabeth Balmforth (Lancashire), 15-12
Mixed
Jessica
Fletcher (Yorks) and Philip Aspinall (Lancashire) took bronze
medal after being knocked out by the eventual gold
medalists, Mark Middleton and Eleanor Laws
(Northumberland). Mark & Eleanor beat Sarah Milne
& Michael Truswell (both Yorks) in a very late final 15-4;
11-15; 15-6.
