Once
again another long enduring weekend of badminton and full marks
to all the participants for being patient and producing some
outstanding badminton.
The
numbers were not as high as those encountered when the BA of E
events take place in the Midland region of the country, but a
good turn out for Yorkshire which represented 38% of the whole
field and almost as many girls competing as the boys (33 girls
and 41 boys).
The
medal count for Yorkshire stood at 10 gold, 6 silver and 4
bronze with Richard Morris taking 3 gold in his 3 events
(singles, doubles and mixed). It is unknown which individuals
received bronze medals on the day due to a large number of
categories only having two groups.
Boys
Grade
2.
Representing
Yorkshire was Richard Morris, Luke Hutchinson, Chris Allen, Paul
Scott and Daniel Shiels.
With
5 out of the 7 players in the singles being represented by
Yorkshire, it was hoped for an all Yorkshire final, but Richard
was the only one to progress from his group to win the final
against Scott Howard of Nottinghamshire by 15/2 15/5.
Grade
3.
Representing
Yorkshire was Michael Truswell, George Hargreaves, Clinton Lau
and Scott Thomson.
Although
none progressed from there groups, Clinton put up a good fight
but lost out by 2 points from progressing from his group. The
final was contested by Philip Aspinall beating Daniel Wolfenden
by 21/16
Grade
4.
Representing
Yorkshire was Luke Gilhooly, James Picard, Adam Lodge, Simon
Templeman, Jonathon Baines, George Brown and William Hall.
George
successfully progressed from his group and won 15/11 in his
semi-final against James Biggs of Nottinghamshire but narrowly
lost out to Chris Goodfellow of Northumberland in the final by
15/12.
Doubles.
Due
to small entry of grade 2 and 3 players, the doubles were made
up of all three grades (2, 3 and 4).
It
became difficult to fathom out how this format worked, but there
were a total of 5 groups each with 4 pairs. Three of the groups
had grade 2 pairs with the others a mixture of Grade 3 and 4.
The
outcome was a mains doubles Yorkshire final between Chris
Allen/Luke Hutchinson against Richard Morris/Daniel Shiels who
won 15/6 15/4.
Clinton
and his partner Luke Swannick who are grade 3 players but had to
compete against grade 2 players in the main doubles section in a
quarter final match. If they had been runners up in there group,
they would have competed in there proper Alternative doubles
section.
Girls
Grade
2.
Representing
Yorkshire was Chloe Chambers, Hayley Shipley, Sarah Milne,
Lauren Birch and Jenna Walker.
Out
of the 4 groups, Jenna successfully progressed from her group to

Cheshire who retired injured. She eventually lost out in the
final against Alison Pulford of Nottinghamshire in 3 sets 4/11,
11/9 and a very close final set 13/12.

11/15 15/5

take the gold medal.
Mixed
Once
again, full marks to those participating in the mixed knockout
event which puts a players endurance to the test by surviving a
very long day and still maintaining a degree of enthusiasm for
this event.
Familiar
faces to reach the semi-final stages were Hayley Shipley/Daniel
Shiels who conceded in their 3rd set to lose to
Alison Pulford/S. Howard of Nottinghamshire to take the bronze
medals. In the other semi, it was Chloe Chambers/Chris Allen up
against Anna Wilson/Richard Morris where they lost by 17/16
15/5. Richard and his Lincolnshire partner went on to win the
final by 21/18.
